Open the letter studioHow to get a birthday message that fits
“Happy birthday, have a great day” is fine, and forgettable. What makes a birthday card worth keeping is one line that could only be about them.
- Who it’s for: a mum, a best friend, a brother or a coworker each need a different voice.
- A detail or two: a hobby, a shared memory, something they did this year, a running joke.
- The milestone, if there is one: a 30th, a 50th, a first birthday, a 90th.
- A tone: funny for friends who’d laugh, warm for most people, heartfelt when you want to say what they mean to you.
Try the same details with two tones. Sometimes the best card is a funny opening and a sincere last line, and you can join the two. For a milestone birthday, say the number once and then talk about the person, not the age.
The shape of a birthday message
| Part | Example |
|---|---|
| The birthday wish | Happy birthday, Jess! |
| Something about them | Another year of being the only one who remembers everyone’s coffee order. |
| A wish for the year ahead | I hope this one brings you that trip to the coast. |
| A warm close | Love you lots, Ellie |

Birthday card message examples
For Mom
“Happy birthday, Mom. Thank you for every packed lunch, every late-night phone call and every time you said “you’ve got this”. I hope today is all about you.”
For a best friend
“Happy birthday to the person who still owes me a karaoke rematch. Another year of you is the best thing that happened to all of us.”
For a brother
“Happy birthday, Dan. You’re officially older and, somehow, still not wiser at board games. Have a brilliant day.”
For a 50th
“Happy 50th, Linda! Half a century of being the kindest person in any room. Here’s to the next fifty, starting with cake.”
For a grandparent
“Happy 90th birthday, Grandpa. Thank you for the fishing trips, the terrible jokes and the stories we’ll tell forever. We love you.”
For a coworker
“Happy birthday, Priya! Thanks for keeping the team laughing and the projects on track. I hope someone else makes the tea today.”
For a child
“Happy 7th birthday, Leo! Seven is a very big number. I hope your day is full of dinosaurs, chocolate cake and lots of running around.”
For a partner
“Happy birthday, my love. Every year with you is my favorite one so far. Let’s go back to that little café and celebrate.”

Mistakes to avoid
- Age jokes for someone who doesn’t like them. Know your audience.
- An inside joke the rest of the family won’t follow, if the card will be read aloud.
- A message that’s all about the gift. The card is about them.
- A late card with no mention of it. A quick “belated” is better than pretending.
Make it sound like you, and get the timing right
Read the message aloud. Swap any word you’d never use, and add their nickname or the name you call them. The best birthday cards sound like you talking.
Aim for the card to arrive a few days before the birthday, so it’s there on the day. If you always remember a day late, free reminders will tell you ahead of time. See every card on our occasions page.
